– Cristiano Ronaldo will not be part of Manchester United’s squad for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Chelsea, the club wrote in a statement.
The Portuguese coach received a lot of criticism when he left Wednesday’s game against Tottenham before the end of the match. TV images showed Ronaldo entering the players’ tunnel minutes before the end of the game.
No reason was given for him to be banned from this weekend’s game against Chelsea from the club itself. But many have speculated that the cause was the star’s behavior on Wednesday. BBC and Manchester Evening News both wrote that this was a result of the incident, and that the club supported Erik ten Hag’s decision.
But according to Athletics it doesn’t stop there. The website also claims that Ronaldo must now train on his own. The reason must be because he refused to be substituted after sitting on the bench for most of the 2-0 win.
– It’s 100 percent understandable that ten Hags chose to do this. Now he (Ronaldo) looks more like a problem than a solution. The team played better without him. “I think they’d be better off without him, given how much distraction he’s been through,” said NRK football writer Thore Haugstad.
He reacted strongly to what happened after the game ended.
– That he left the game before the end was disrespectful and unnecessary. This is pure ego. It seems she refuses to accept that this isn’t about her.
Criticized by Solbakken
In the Viaplay studio after the game, national team manager Ståle Solbakken was unkind in criticizing the man many consider one of the greatest footballers of all time.
– The only thing that was not impressive (in the game) was the departure of Ronaldo. That might cast the roses a little shadow, Solbakken said.
– To me, that’s unacceptable. “In my opinion, there must be consequences,” continued the national team manager later in his broadcast.
In England, they were also not impressed by Ronaldo’s behavior.
– He’s a spoiled kid, to be honest, says former Aston Villa player Gabby Agbonlahor.
– The team have done very well without him from the start, so for him to do that is very unprofessional, says Sky Sports pundit and former Manchester City player Micah Richards.
Claiming he’s in a meeting
He is said to have held meetings with ten Hags earlier on Thursday because of his behavior.
The Dutchman announced that he would have a chat with his superstar.
This is not the first time there has been controversy surrounding Ronaldo since his return to Manchester United. This summer, several media outlets claimed that he wanted to leave United, after the club failed to qualify for the Champions League.
Moreover, he has spent most of the season on the bench, and has only one goal in the Premier League. Very unusual for Ronaldo, who has five Golden Balls in his career and has won the Champions League many times.
