Russia’s crisis will affect tourism, claims the European tourism leader

The current crisis in relations between Russia and Europe could negatively affect global tourism. This is mainly the decline in Russian tourists, as shown by the German travel and tourism group TUI AG, the majority owner of the largest European travel agency TUI Travel.

Along with Chinese tourists, Russian tourists are one of the biggest drivers of global tourism. They travel all over the world. Moreover, wherever they go, they spend a lot of money. As predicted by the World Tourism Organization, Russian and Chinese tourists should increase global tourism by 4 to 4.5 percent this year.

But the situation is starting to take a turn for the worse, as the TUI AG has warned. Since last year, the Russian economy has slowed down. In addition, Russian consumers will have to face the sanctions imposed on Russia in March this year. The situation is getting more complicated sanctions were announced in early Augustas the European Union and the US react to Russia’s embargo on some Western foods.

TUI AG CEO Frierich Joussen said the company was already feeling the impact of the current tourism crisis.

Fewer Russian tourists are also registered in Czechia

Tensions between Russia and the West resulted in i decline in Russian tourists in the Czech Republic. For example, 23 thousand fewer tourists visited Prague in the second quarter of this year than in the same period last year.

The decline in the number of Russian tourists has also been exacerbated recently the collapse of the Russian travel agency.
