Espanyol to a new attack after the Barcelona match – filed a formal complaint
Espanyol struck again at the decision to allow Barcelona star Robert Lewandowski to play for the host city in Spanish football on New Year’s Eve.
The match ended 1-1, and there was already a huge fuss over whether Poland’s Lewandowski would be allowed to play after not.
The star forward was sent off in Barcelona’s final game before the World Cup break against Osasuna. He picked up two yellow cards, which should have qualified him for a one-match ban. However, the Spanish Football Association extended the ban to three matches as a result of Lewandowski allegedly showing disrespect to the referee in relation to the red card.
Barcelona chose to appeal the decision and ahead of Saturday’s match, a court in Madrid surprisingly ruled to allow La Liga’s top scorer to play the Espanyol game while the appeal is handled.
On Monday, Espanyol stated that the club had sent a formal complaint to the Spanish Football Federation about the decision. The Catalan club claim it suffered damage as a result of the Polish player being allowed to play on Saturday. Lewandowski contributed to one Barcelona goal.
