Former German SPD Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder has not been invited to his party’s planned 160th anniversary celebrations in Berlin next week. The decision was influenced by the attitude of the politician towards the war in Ukraine. However, Schroeder will be seen in a film about the party’s history during the festivities on May 23.
SPD General Secretary Kevin Kuehnert stated that as long as Schroeder is “close to warmongers and aggressors, as seen last week during a visit to the Russian embassy”, they have nothing to say to each other.
The daily Berliner Zeitung reported that on May 9, the anniversary of the surrender of Nazi Germany in World War II, at a reception at the Russian embassy in Berlin from the German political world, “Schroeder and his wife So-yeon Schroeder-Kim , former general secretary of the SED attended Egon Krenz , Klaus Ernst of the Left Party and AfD politicians Alexander Gauland and Tino Chrupalla.
However, Schroeder will be seen in a film about the history of the party during the celebrations on May 23, reports the weekly portal “Zeit”. After all, he is “part of the history of social democracy,” says Kuehnert. “After all, the break with Gerhard Schroeder is not a historical pause, but a current one, which is clearly related to his position in the context of Putin’s war against Ukraine,” he explained.
Schroeder was chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005. After leaving office, he worked for a Russian energy company for many years and is considered a friend of Vladimir Putin. Since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, he has been widely criticized for his links to the Kremlin.
