Not everyone was able to come to Warsaw for today’s parade, which is why several hundred people gathered at Plac Wolności in Opole. They protested, among other things, against government policies.
Similar events occurred throughout Poland. Today we celebrate the anniversary of the 1989 parliamentary elections. These were the first partially free elections in the history of Poland after World War II. Representatives of the undemocratic communist authorities of the Polish People’s Republic guaranteed that the ruling coalition, consisting of the Polish United Workers’ Party and its satellites, secure at least 299 (65%) seats in the Sejm. The remaining 161 (35%) parliamentary seats are allocated to non-partisan candidates. The contest for this seat and for all the senator’s mandates (100) took place openly and democratically.
Gathered at Plac Wolności in Opole protested among others. contrary to current government policy. – I call on everyone to march at noon on June 4 in Warsaw. Against high prices, theft and lies, for free elections and democracy, European Poland – wrote Donald Tusk on Twitter a few weeks ago. The leaders of the Civil Platform wished to bring tens of thousands of people to Warsaw that day who oppose the rule of Law and Justice. This will be the culmination of the ongoing pre-campaign to parliament.
“The first step to get rid of slavery is to be brave, to be free. The first step to victory is to know your own strength. We are here today, so that all of Poland, all of Europe, the whole world, so that everyone can see how strong we are!” – wrote Donald Tusk on Twitter.
Hundreds of people showed up in Liberty Square today. This is the voice of the people who want change in Poland.
– As a young man, I wanted to decide about my body, have the opportunity for a normal job, a normal salary, a normal apartment, and my friends could love whoever they wanted. I just want everyone to be able to judge themselves and be free – said Karolina, a participant in the protest.
– This manifests the rudeness and total mafia activity of our current government and the leading PiS party. He manifested against hypocrisy, lies, against the primitive behavior of people who are not worthy of holding the highest office in this country – said Mr Leszek, a participant in the protest.
– I am glad that so many people reacted to this disgraceful act and it really caused a lot of people to protest – he added.
