“In Berlin, the government and opposition are arguing over how to stop illegal immigration at the German border. Who is allowed to enter the country and who is not? Illegal entries are already blocked every day,” said the German tabloid “Bild”, which accompanies German border guards in their daily work.

According to the newspaper, at least one family of five from Tajikistan had to leave Germany, dragging their belongings in wheeled suitcases, and return to Poland via the border bridge connecting Frankfurt (Oder) with Słubice.

The father of the family, quoted by “Bild”, said that they did not have permission to stay in Germany and “had a letter” stating that they had to return to Poland. One of the police officers guarding the border explained to the newspaper that anyone who has not applied for asylum in Germany or is already registered in Poland or is banned from entering Germany will be turned away at the border.

The newspaper reported that from October 2023, when border controls were introduced, to July this year, German police sent back around 4,600 people to Poland.

In April and May this year alone, 2,938 people were turned back at land borders with Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria and Switzerland, which is around 90 percent more than in the same period last year.

On Wednesday, five Egyptian citizens were repatriated to Poland.
