During the conference Our Ocean in Panama, participating nations pledged nearly $20 billion to protect the world’s oceans.
As we read in the summary statement of the two days event, the United States alone promised to allocate USD 6 billion to support 77 projects in this field. American envoy and US presidential plenipotentiary on climate issues, John Kerry, announced investments in, among other things, marine protected areas, sustainable fisheries and renewable energy sources.
The European Union has announced an increase in spending on the world’s oceans this year to €816.5 million.
Hosting this year’s event, Panama has announced it will double the size of its protected area, which in the future will cover more than half of the country’s exclusive economic zone.
In total, 341 commitments were made, totaling $19.9 billion.
This conference has been held since 2014 Our Ocean it brings together representatives of governments, the private sector and organizations from more than 70 countries. The next edition of the event will take place next year in Greece.
