Now, a spectacular board game set in a popular fantasy world has finally reached the hands of players. Not only crowdfunding supporters, but also interested parties come to board game stores. Including Czech ones.
witch is no longer just a series of fantasy books by Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski. It has grown into a world-famous brand, which, in addition to short stories and novels, has several – very successful – video game adaptations, comics and an abundance of merchandise. Expected board games have also expanded the range of witchcraft products The Witch: The Old World. And you don’t have to be a huge fan of the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia to enjoy it. Although of course it will double the experience.
“I would recommend The Witcher: The Old World to all fans of the Witcher world and story-based fantasy games,” said Michal Ekrt from publisher Blackfire, which distributes the game in our country, to CzechCrunch. After a successful kickstarter campaign in 2021, a title inspired by a computer adaptation witch gradually received backing from Polish studio CD Projekt. Now it has finally appeared in domestic stores and with Czech translation. But how witch is he playing?
“Players are waiting to run around the map, fight with monsters and other spellcasters, and evaluate various random events. And of course the development of your character’s abilities. The whole game is controlled by cards, where your deck is used to move around the map, but also to create combat combinations. At the same time, the cards represent your wizard’s life,” explained Ekrt. Story-wise, the game is set in a time before the book and game adventures of Geralt and his friends, but contains famous monsters and fighters from various wizarding schools.

Those interested can choose between the basic version (available for around 1,700 crowns) and a deluxe edition with twenty-eight plastic monster figures (around 3,600 crowns). The game is available in Czech, including three expansions unlocked as part of crowdfunding. The Witch: The Old World it’s designed for up to five players, but reviews agree that it’s a bit more fun in smaller numbers. It also supports solo play.
In a combination of deluxe and regular variants, more than ten thousand pieces of the local game will reach Czech shops. “The translation was led by Ondřej Šesták, who localized, for example, Game of Thrones cards.
