Improved security, more beds in mental hospitals and even revisiting contentious bail reform issues are just some of the promises Kathy Hochul, 65, announced in the state’s annual address. As he admits, his goal is to give residents the “New York dream”.
We will make New York safer. We will make New York more affordable. We will create more jobs and opportunities for New Yorkers today and tomorrow,” the Governor said in a speech Tuesday in Albany to the State Assembly.
During the ceremony, he unveiled his plans to “make the New York dream come true,” which includes 147 initiatives. One of these is a strategy aimed at overcoming the housing crisis and providing more than 800,000 apartments over the next decade.
Hochul also said that to achieve the intended goal, it is necessary to improve the situation of patients struggling with mental illness. The governor announced that his government would provide, among other things, an additional 1,000 beds in mental hospitals and 3,500 commercial places designated for the sick.
Democrats also alluded to controversial bailout reform and called for “mature talks” during budget talks that could potentially lead to changes to existing laws. The governor also announced a statewide increase in the minimum wage to tackle inflation. As the New York Post points out, the Democrat made no mention of the immigration crisis in his 47-minute speech.
