Tiril Udnes Weng and Astrid Øyre Slind through the first two stages for Norway, but it was Østberg’s departure from Frida Karlsson at the third stage that will be remembered as the defining moment.
– It’s raw. I don’t have much to say. This is absolutely fantastic, a tearful Stig Rune Kveen told NRK.
Germany took silver 20.5 seconds behind broadcaster Kalvå, while slow-moving Sweden had to settle for bronze.
Before Kalvå’s exit in the final stage, the Norwegian lead was 6.2 seconds behind runners-up Germany and another 8.7 seconds over Sweden.
– There is a golden air of Norway in Planica, says NRK expert Torgeir Bjørn.
He was right on that point. Kalvå is running steadily and well and doesn’t let the competitors get the better of him. However, he increased his lead.

– Close to each other
Tiril Udnes Weng took turns at the front with Sweden and Finland’s Emma Ribom and Germany right behind after the first five kilometers.
During the stage, Weng received a yellow card when he and Ribom collided. The incident did not damage anyone in front of the pitch. A yellow card later in the championship would disqualify Weng.
– We’re close to each other. We could probably keep a little distance, both of us, but it was a little simmering as we delivered, and we wanted to follow suit. We have to put up with it, Weng told NRK.
Break the staff
Slind made his first career WC relay against Ebba Andersson, Kerttu Niskanen and Katharina Hennig. It was dramatic, but especially for Sweden when Andersson fell and broke his post. At the substitution, the Swedes were 8 seconds behind, but Karlsson quickly took the lead.
Østberg gets the job of controlling Karlsson. She was more than capable of that and moved from taking the lead before Kalvå took the lead and securing the win in her debut as a female announcer.
The Norwegian women’s team has won medals at all world championships except in Liberec (2009) this millennium side. Seven of the championships ended in gold.
