The Russian economy is benefiting from the US-China trade war

In the first half of the year, China's exports to Russia increased 17 percent year-on-year to 26.9 billion dollars (596 billion kroons). Russian exports to Asia's largest economy grew more significantly – by 35 percent to 31.5 billion dollars (700 billion crowns), RT.com reported.

Trade exchanges between Moscow and Beijing during the period totaled almost 60 billion dollars, and by the end of the year, according to estimates, the amount will exceed 100 billion dollars.

Foreign trade between countries had grown by 19 percent between 2016 and 2017, but now the pace is accelerating. The reason is the escalating tariff war between the US and China, while at the same time Moscow is focusing on eastern markets in light of EU sanctions following the annexation of Crimea and alleged support for rebels in Ukraine.

Especially food

Chinese people mostly buy Russian food and drinks, sweets – such as linden honey or ice cream, but also household goods in popular shops. China buys more Russian gas. They also import large amounts of wheat and soybeans, most of which are purchased from America.

Russian agriculture especially benefits from exports to China.

Beijing has repeatedly strongly criticized US actions. “Certain people go against the grain and morality for their personal interests, recklessly raising customs barriers and threatening everyone around them with the hegemon's stick,” the state-run New China Agency wrote.
