The Spanish Football Association said nothing and said soccer president Luis Rubiales’ behavior during the World Cup final had damaged the sport’s reputation.
In a sensational statement signed by Acting Football President Pedro Rocha, the Spanish Federation issued an unconditional apology to the entire national and international football community. The UN is also on the list of recipients.
The letter was published on the Spanish Football Federation’s website on Tuesday afternoon.
There, Rocha wrote that he felt the need to convey “the most sincere apologies to the world of football as a whole, to the football institutions (FIFA, UEFA, UN), to the footballers and especially the players in the national teams, clubs -Spanish clubs, England women’s national team and fans all over the world.”
Additionally, reference was made to the behavior of suspended football president Luis Rubiales during the World Cup final. This was described as completely unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of “Spanish society, our institutions, our representatives, our athletes and Spanish sports management”.
Pampered
Rocha also wrote that the tolerance and civility underlying Spanish society were undermined by Rubiales’ behavior.
Suspended football bigwig kissed national team player Jennifer Hermoso on the mouth after the World Cup final. There was an unclear violent reaction.
“The damage done to Spanish football, Spanish sport, Spanish society and football values is enormous,” he said.
“The RFEF would like to convey to the entire community and the entire world of football its deepest regret for what happened and which has disrupted our team, football and society. “We are deeply sorry for the damage caused, and therefore we must apologize profusely and commit to ensuring that such an incident will not happen again,” the association further wrote.
Rocha stressed that Rubiales’ behavior was at his own expense, and it did not reflect unity in any way.
“We are deeply sorry and embarrassed for the suffering and additional burden this has caused,” said the letter published on Tuesday.
Under investigation
On Friday, it emerged that the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Spain was opening an investigation into Rubiales. This happened after the government submitted a petition regarding this matter through the Spanish Sports Council.
At the same time, Rubiales launched a new attack on his critics. Among other things, he attacked what he considered premature political interference, and at the same time thanked him for his support.
“Throughout this period, I have been the victim of an unprecedented lynching in the media and politics, and I myself did not interfere in this. “Not only nationally, but globally,” he wrote, among other things.
Football officials believe that an arbitration tribunal and investigation initiated by the International Football Association (FIFA) will exonerate him.
FIFA has suspended him for 90 days until the investigation is complete.
