In some ways, Easter traditions across the continent agree. Rather, they differ diametrically in some customs. Everywhere, those celebrating the holiday enjoy special meals and spend time with family. However, in many parts of the world, Easter days are peppered with a multitude of customs that are not followed and most of which are not even known to Czechs.
Norway is in suspense
Just as fairy tales are broadcast almost non-stop in the Czech Republic during the Christmas holidays, during Easter there are also detective stories on Norwegian television around the clock. It just belongs to this spring holiday. Detective stories, and not only on television, are a long-standing Easter tradition in Norway. Crime stories also appear in newspapers and Internet servers. The reader himself is also involved in the resolution of the plot. Hercule Poirot by Agatha Christie is an integral part of Easter broadcasts in Norway.
Greece is obsessed with eggs
The Greeks win the most at Easter with eggs. They were overthrown and thrown. In egg rolling, the winner is the participant whose “racer” covers the furthest distance, or the participant who manages to catch the most eggs from his opponent. In Greek families, wild egg fights are also organized as part of Easter traditions. In this game, participants try to break their opponent’s eggs. Festive dishes here include majiritsa soup made from sheep’s entrails.
Crucifixion in the Philippines
Not “like” but really. Devout Filipino Christians allowed themselves to be crucified again on Good Friday this year to commemorate the memory of Jesus Christ. They put microphones in their faces so that everyone present could hear their wails. Apart from crucifixions, whippings with belts and bamboo also took place on the outskirts of San Fernando (about 90 kilometers from Manila). Every year, procession participants here authentically imitate Christ’s final journey and thus strive for redemption for their own sins.
