Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11, and this year was no different. Since the beginning of the month, the Post Bellum association has been gathering, where volunteers offer poppies. On Friday, the Memory of the Nation event will take place in Liberec in the park on Jablonecká Street, where students will symbolically plant fields of poppies.
The day the end of the First World War is celebrated around the world. The symbol is a poppy flower. The flower then covered the graves of the soldiers who died on the Western Front. “And November 11th will also be remembered by those of us in the north with the symbolic planting of fields of poppies. This is a thank you from Memory of the Nation to everyone who has so far joined the collection and purchased poppies online,” said the regional branch director of the Memory of the Nation of Northern Bohemia Michaela Pavlátova.
Poppies will be planted by representatives of the Memory of the Nation, city, region and students from 11:30 am in the garden on Jablonecká Street.
The non-profit organization Post Bellum has been documenting the stories of 20th century heroes for the publicly accessible Memory of the Nation archive for more than twenty years. “The courage of the men and women who fought against Nazism and Communism is commendable. They risked their health, their lives, they sacrificed the lives of their families for the sake of the desire for a free country, and that is why we must not allow these stories to be forgotten. We must pass it on to the next generation in an interesting way.” Pavlátová thought.
