Turkish Defense Minister: meeting to unblock Ukraine’s grain exports may be this week

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said on Monday that a second meeting of military delegations from Turkey, Ukraine and Russia to unblock Ukraine’s grain exports via the Black Sea could be held this week. The first talks on the matter took place on Wednesday.

Akar said on Monday that a “master plan” for the export corridor had been set. At the next meeting, the technical details of the agreement, establishment of checkpoints and safe transportation routes will be discussed.

Reuters’ office said, citing the Kremlin’s press service, that President Vladimir Putin and Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan would discuss the issue of unblocking grain exports from Ukraine during a meeting in Tehran on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, following a meeting of military delegations from Turkey, Ukraine and Russia in Istanbul, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said he had succeeded in making “significant steps forward” on Ukraine’s grain exports in the Black Sea.

We hope that the next steps will allow us to reach a formal agreement Guterres added, but noted that technical work was still needed to realize the progress made in Wednesday’s negotiations.

Ukraine is one of the world’s largest exporters of wheat, mainly transported by sea. Millions of tons of grain are currently stored in ports on the Black Sea coast that are blocked by Russian ships.
