Public television news stations have set up compensation counters. The total amount is PLN 6,220,609,000,000. The graph may show, however, that this is about PLN 6 with many decimal places, and not PLN 6 billion calculated by a special team of parliament.

Counters aren’t everything. TVP Info broadcasts a propaganda site where – according to the broadcast – the amount owed by Germany to Poland for the damage caused during World War II has been converted into dollars. In the background, images of explosions, tenement collapses, fires, and war damage. And sound alarm siren announce impending danger. Finally, a blackboard with the slogan: “#bezprzedawNIEnia”. The place was prepared by the Polish National Foundation.
War repairs. The government calculates the amount of debt from Germany at PLN 6 billion
On September 1, Jarosław Kaczyński announced that Poland would demand compensation from Germany for the damage caused during World War II. – This is our goal, which is part of the whole concept of restoring normality when it comes to the functioning of the Polish state – said Kaczyński. The presented report on war reparations calculated Poland’s losses in excess of PLN 6 billion 220 billion.
– We know that we are entering a path that will last a long time and will not be easy. We do not announce success very quickly – said Jarosław Kaczyński on September 1.
Let us recall that in 2006, when PiS came to power, the then foreign minister Anna Fotyga responded to one of the parliamentary interpellations as follows:
Poland’s doctrinal position on international law is very unambiguous and leaves no doubt on the fact that Poland has refused reparations from Germany. In the following years, the Polish government repeatedly stated that the issue of exercising Polish reparation rights from Germany had been closed
– Fotyga convincing. It is also stated that on August 22, 1953, the Soviet Union made an agreement with the GDR to close the issue of reparations by Germany. “The next day, namely on August 23, 1953, the Council of Ministers of the Polish People’s Republic adopted a resolution Declaration of the government of the Polish People’s Republic on war reparations” – we read in reply. More on the case in the text by Marcin Kozłowski:
Opposition: The government needs Smolensk . new
Paulina Hennig-Kloska called the presentation of the report and its return to the topic of war reparations a purely political act. – It will not make any Pole even zloty go to the budget – assessed Hennig-Kloska.
They need a new Smolensk. They like to make politics about the pain and suffering of the Polish people. And that’s what they tried to do the second time
– emphasizes guest Poranna Rozmowy Gazeta.pl. – This requires internal evaluation and talks on the part of Poland. The path chosen by the government today made Poland burst out laughing, as Kaczyński talked about money he would never be able to bring here, Hennig-Kloska said. In his opinion, other money that is “spread on the table and the government doesn’t reach for it” is more important to Poland. This is funds from KPO. In the end, he asserts that the issue of reparations is now being handled in a frivolous manner.
– What was done last week at the Royal Palace was for domestic politics. Kaczyński will try to play with the division again – this is the opinion of Ireneusz Ras of the Civic Coalition.
The decisive vote on reparations came from Berlin. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the issue of reparations for the damage caused to Poland during World War II had been “resolved”. – I can emphasize, like all previous federal governments, that this issue is finally resolved in international law – said Chancellor Scholz in an interview with the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” (quoted from the PAP).
