Norway’s Jakob Ingebrigtsen broke the 3000m world record at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzów, part of the Diamond League, with a time of 7:17.55. Meanwhile, Sweden’s Armand Duplantis bettered his own world record in the pole vault with a time of 6.26. Natalia Kaczmarek was third in the 400m.
President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda watched the athletes’ match from the stands of the Silesia Stadium.
The previous world record in the 3000 m from 1996 was held by Kenyan Daniel Komen – 7:20.67. Ingebrigtsen became the Olympic champion in the 5000 m race in Paris, and in June he won the European Championships in Rome in two distances – 1500 and 5000 m.
In Chorzów, the Norwegian was followed by three Ethiopians. Berihu Aregawi was second, improving the national record to 7:21.28. Yomif Kejelcha was third (7:28.44) and Sudahun Haile Bekele (7:30.97) was fourth. Filip Rak set the pace.
Duplantis broke the world record for the third time this year. At the Olympics in Paris he achieved 6.25, and on April 20 in Xiamen – 6.24. He received $ 50,000 for his achievements. The Swede has already recorded 10 best results in history – from 6.17 to 6.26. He broke the world record for the first time in February 2020 in Toruń and since then he has completely dominated the competition in this competition. He has won two Olympic gold medals. He has also won many world and European championships.
This is the third global record in the history of the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial. In 2016, Anita Włodarczyk set a world record in the hammer throw – 82.98.
Before the official start of the meeting, Tokyo Olympic medalists in the 4 x 400 m relay Anna Kiełbasińska and Małgorzata Hołub-Kowalik, who ended their careers, ceremonially said goodbye. The players were transported by car along the track of the Silesia Stadium and were applauded by the fans.
There was a visible sensation (on the skin), there was an incredible emotion. There were so many people. Uncontrollable tears of emotion. It was a whirlwind of thoughts. As we got out of the car, I said to Gosia, let’s run one last time. I don’t know if we broke the orchestral choreography on the treadmill. Her clothes (white and red) were a complete coincidence
– said Kiełbasińska.
Natalia Kaczmarek finished third in the 400m with a time of 49.95. The Polish record holder was followed by Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic (48.66) and Bahrain’s Salwa Eid Naser (49.23). The three runners placed in the same order at the Paris Olympics, where Kaczmarek won bronze. Fourth in Chorzów was Rhasidat Adeleke of Ireland (50.00).
I am happy that despite the fatigue, I managed to finish in third place. It was hard to get motivated. It is very nice that I showed again that I am among the best in the world. At the beginning I felt incredible emotions, I knew that everyone in the stands was supporting me. I am happy that the “light” stayed in Poland. After the Olympics, I had a lot of non-sporting things, but I broke 50 seconds again, so I am happy with myself because I did not know how good I was today.

This year, Kaczmarek bettered the Polish record held by Irena Szewińska since 1976. She ran under 49 seconds three times, and on July 20 in London she ran the 400m in 48.90. After the start, the European champion said she was tired of the intense season and would not take part in the final Diamond League meeting in Brussels, which will take place on September 13-14.
Ewa Swoboda, with a time of 11.03, was sixth in the 100m. Jamaica’s Tia Clayton (10.83), Ivory Coast’s Marie-Josee Ta Lou-Smith (10.83) and American Tamari Davis (10.83) were all under 11.84). The Pole was also followed by Britain’s Daryll Neita (11.01) and Luxembourg’s Patrizia van der Weken (11.03).
It was the last start of the season for me, I gave everything I had. It was great that so many people came. I haven’t seen a stadium full like this for a long time. It warmed my heart. I think the result of 11.03 is not bad. I was afraid that today the weather would be as hot as Saturday. There was drama, but fortunately today was much better. It’s hard for me to sum up the season. It was definitely too long, very jerky. Not enough time to work, but three events and two medals. I’m happy but also tired. I can’t wait to get in the car and say to myself – it’s over, I’m going home to rest
– Swoboda concluded.
Klaudia Kazimierska broke the four-minute barrier for the first time in her career in the 1500m. She improved her personal best to 3:59.95 and finished sixth. The fastest in this distance were Ethiopians: Diribe Welteji (3:57.08) and Freweyni Hailu (3:57.88).
The shot put competition was won by American Joe Kovacs with a score of 22.14, beating his compatriot Ryan Crouser – the world record holder and Olympic champion – by two centimeters. European champion Leonardo Fabbri from Italy was third – 22.03. Kondrad Bukowiecki pushed 19.88 and took 11th place. None of Michał Haratyk’s efforts were measured.
The winner of the 200 m race was Olympic champion Letsileegogo from Botswana (19.83). Alexander Ogando was second, setting a Dominican record (19.86). Behind him were three Americans: Kenneth Bednarek, Erriyon Knighton and Kyree King. Albert Komański, who ran on the first track, achieved the ninth fastest time – 21.07.
European record holder Femke Bol won the 400m hurdles in 52.13. This time, the Dutchwoman overtook American Anna Cockrell (52.88), whom she beat in the Olympic final in Paris. Third place went to Jamaican Rushell Clayton (53.11).
Karsten Warholm from Norway is also a favorite. The vice-Olympic champion won with a time of 46.95. Second place was taken by Frenchman Clement Ducos, who improved his personal record to 47.42. The third was Abderrahman Samba from Qatar – 47.69.
None of the Polish representatives advanced to the final 100m hurdles, which will feature nine competitors. Pia Skrzyszowska was 10th – 12.58. Klaudia Wojtunik was 13th with a time of 13.02, and Marika Majewska took 14th – 13.15.
The stakes are as they should be in the Diamond League. I think my performance went well. I only had a little bit of my legs left, so I ran that far. There is nothing to complain about. After the Olympics, the performance has decreased day by day. Motivation and mobilization too. The atmosphere in the stadium was great today. I got goosebumps when my name was announced. I plan to take part in at least two more races this season, and then take a long-awaited and needed vacation
– said Skrzyszowska.
In the final 100m hurdles race, Jamaica’s Akcera Nugent improved the meet record to 12.29.
Wojciech Nowicki finished third and Paweł Fajdek fifth in the hammer throw competition. Olympic champion Ethan Katzberg of Canada won with a throw of 80.03. Mykhailo Kochan of Ukraine was second, scoring a best effort of 79.85. Nowicki sent the hammer to a distance of 76.05. Bence Halasz of Hungary had the same result. Fajdek had only two measured attempts and finished with a result of 74.53.
It’s the end of the season. The body is relaxed because the event is the Olympics. I’m going home, the most important thing for me is to spend time with my family. I feel tired of this season. My head wants to give up, but it’s difficult. I’m happy that so many fans came. The weather is good, something beautiful. For me, it’s very important to honor the memory of Kamila Skolimowska. It’s time to rest a bit and be motivated to train.
– said Nowicki.
The next Diamond League meeting will be held on Friday at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, where athletes competed during the European Championships in June.
