Sweden into World Cup semi-finals – beat Germany after a superb opening quarter
Sweden’s handball women are ready for the semifinals of the Handball World Cup after a 27-20 win against Germany. The foundation was built on a great start on defense.
Sweden provided sharp defense early on, and after just 14 minutes of play, Emily Bölk scored Germany’s first goal. Then the score was 7-1 on the scoreboard.
– Things are going a little badly with Germany, and they are constantly taking difficult chances. Sweden was strong defensively and delivered punches. In addition, (Johanna) Bundsen faced an extraordinary match at the finish line. The favorability stamp is increasing for Sweden, said Viaplay commentator Peder Seierstad during the opening quarter.
The dominance continued for the remainder of the first half as well, and led by the Vipers’ Jamina Roberts, Sweden led with a solid ten goals at the change of sides.
– Swedish German filler. 16-6 after first 30! Germany has a lot to think about, concluded Seierstad.
After the break, Germany continued to press, but there was never any real joy at winning in Boxen in Herning.
On Friday, Sweden will face reigning Olympic champions France in the semifinals.
Sweden has not won a medal at an international championship since 2014 (EC bronze). They have never won a medal in the WC before. 4th place in the 2017 World Championship is the nation’s best position. (NTB)
