Wild comeback by Eikeri and Vliegen – to sensational finals – NRK Sport – Sports news, results and broadcast schedules

It was dramatic when Eikeri and his Belgian partner Joran Vliegen reached the historic final at Roland-Garros. The audience could hardly believe what they had just witnessed.

In “Drivhuset”, the most captivating of the three stadium facilities, Eikeri faced a peeling dimension as he and Vliegen fought back and made it to the final.

But the story can quickly become very different. Eikeri and Vliegen are currently looking for a partner.

I would say we really died down until the last minute. Past very at the last minute, actually, said Eikeri at the press conference after the win.

Eikeri explains to NRK that he really has to play with someone else. He turned down the first offer from Vliegen because he had made an appointment, but left the door open in case something happened.

And it happened. The ratings of Eikeri and his original partner turned out not to be good enough.

We worked together right before “Deadlines”. “We are the last pair inside,” Eikeri told NRK of a complete reversal.

How fast before?

It was just a few minutes before, actually. “We had little contact half an hour earlier, but we didn’t register until two or three minutes earlier,” said Eikeri.

So now is Vliegen and Eikeri ready for the final.

– Dit was amazing, said Eikeri.

Huge resistance

The duo recently beat Kevin Krawietz, who is one of the world’s best doubles players in the gravel. The German has won the French Open twice for men.

Nicole Melichar-Martinez has the last two defeats in the context of a Grand Slam, as well as the next two semifinals. This duo had been ranked in the top ten of the world several times.

And that’s what Eikeri and Vliegen knew from the start. It looked like it would be easy for Melichar-Martinez and Krawietz, who were outstanding in the first set (1-6) – and came close to winning the second.

But Eikeri and Vliegen broke their opponent’s serve for the first time in the second set when they pulled the gap back to 4-5, and in the end the pair won the second set after the tie break (7-4).

In the supertie break, the first with ten points, Eikeri and Vliegen decided 10-7.

Secretary General Aslak Paulsen could not believe what he had just witnessed. In the stands the audience could see and feel the excitement that lasted until the final blow.

– They were toyed with, nothing to say other than that. But then turned around. “The opposing pair didn’t get everything they needed, took a few more chances, and we’re sitting here with a pulse of 180,” Paulsen told NRK.

– Not everyday

The Super Tie break ended 10-7, and now Eikeri and Vliegen will play the final in the doubles tournament.

Eurosport commentary believes that Eikeri should have a lot of credit for the pair making it to the final, and should put in good performances on several occasions.

– Eikeri has been much better than his partner. “I think he has become a better tennis player today than he was before,” said Krogh Sundb.

The Secretary-General knows he is proud to be Norwegian now.

– I just have to congratulate Ulrikke on an absolutely insane achievement. It’s not every day you’re allowed to run into a Norwegian in a grand slam final, he said.

He could hardly believe that the couple had managed to turn it to their advantage.

– To start with, it looks like they will go home with 1-0 or 1-1. But then something happens when you have something to hold on to, and that can be demanding. I am very proud. Now we’ve got appetizers, he says and aims for the Scandinavian duel between Casper Ruud and Holger Rune later Wednesday.

The match ended 1-6 and 7-6 (7-4), 10-7, and ended in one hour and 24 minutes.

In the final, the settlement winners were Gabriela Dabrowski, Canada/John Peers, Australia and Ena Shibahara, Japan/Wesley Koolhof, the Netherlands. The pair were the third and second seeds in the tournament.
