Sara Bejlek (16) made her comeback in a US Open qualifier against Heather Watson, but it wasn’t the win that stole the headlines after.
That’s because of the winning photos after Sara Beljeksetter won 2-1 in the set against the Briton. The session started normally as the 16-year-old thanked his opponent for the match, but quickly derailed when Beljek went to Jaroslav Bejlek’s father.
In a video that has gone viral on Twitter, the 16-year-old can be seen being patted on the bottom by the father, who then kisses his daughter’s mouth. Beljek then turns to his trainer, who almost mimics his father’s maneuver, but it has to be pointed out that he breaks the kiss.
It caused a flurry of reactions and a lot of questions were asked Twitter thread.
Now Bejlek responded to the reaction:
– I saw the video. It was a spontaneous reaction from the whole team. This may seem uncomfortable to some, but we have discussed it with the team. It won’t happen again, he said iSports.
He continued:
– He is my father and always will be. And I’ve known my coach since I was eight years old. If something similar happened in the Czech Republic, no one would react. But since we are in the US, everyone is commenting on it. As previously mentioned, we’ve spoken and it won’t happen again.
At least there won’t be a similar scene from the US Open in the near future. On Tuesday, Beljek’s adventure ended after the defeat against Liudmila Samsonova.
