The World Congress of Ukraine (UWC) asked the Canadian Federal Court to rule on the need to return the turbines for the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline to Germany and block them. The Canadian government on Saturday gave provisional approval to return the turbines, making an exception to its own sanctions against Russia for its aggression against Ukraine.
The request stated that the decision to give consent was unwarranted, transparent, or properly considered – wrote UWC in Tuesday’s statement.
The application has been filed with the Federal Court of Canada which handles several cases of federal jurisdiction.
Lawyers cited in the announcement pointed out that if the court agreed with UWC’s arguments, it could revoke the consent issued by the Ottawa government.
UWC chairman Paul Grod was quoted in a press release as calling Canada’s decision a “serious error”.
In recent days, the Ukrainian World Congress, together with the Ukraine-Canada Congress, asked the Canadian government to withdraw the revocation of a decision submitted to (company) Siemens Canada (allowing the return of the turbine repaired to Nord Stream 1 to Germany); So far our actions have been fruitless and we have no choice but to take legal action – underlined in communication.
The government in Ottawa, under pressure from Berlin, announced on Saturday that it would make an exception to sanctions against Russia and send turbines serviced in Canada back to Germany. Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Jonathan Wilkinson, pointed to the concerns of Germany and other European countries about, among other things, providing heating in winter. Replacement will be made with special authorization – temporary and can be cancelled. At the same time, Canada announced further sanctions against Russia.
On Monday, the US State Department backed Canada’s decision to return the turbines to Germany, stressing in an announcement that it would allow “Germany and other European countries to replenish gas reserves in the short term”, and at the same time – it pointed to out – that a solution to make European countries independent of supply is being sought energy resources from Russia.
