In 2010, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) decided to designate June 25 as International Seafarers’ Day. The aim of the day is to thank seafarers for their contributions to the global economy and civil society, and for the personal risks and costs (such as separation from family) they incur while doing their job.

Sailor they are not only responsible for the smooth handling and operation of the ship, but also for the safe and smooth delivery of cargo. The day not only highlights the invaluable work of seafarers, it aims to draw the world’s attention to issues affecting their work and lives, as well as threats such as piracy.

IMO has asked governments to develop policies to ensure fair treatment of seafarers in ports and asked private ship owners and ship owners to ensure that their employees are provided with adequate facilities and comfort while at sea. The International Organization encourages governments, shipping companies, shipping companies and others to promote and support maritime trade and seafarers through Seafarers’ Day.

In 2023, regarding the contribution of seafarers to the protection of the marine environment, according to the World Maritime slogan “MARPOL 50 years – our commitment continues”. As part of the campaign, the organization asked seafarers to share photos of the marine environment around them while at sea, highlighting the importance of protecting the marine environment. This year, the 2023 campaign hashtag is #OceansWorthProtecting.
