The Labor Party proposes steps to handle whistleblowing cases in the Norwegian Armed Forces – Dagsavisen

– In order to avoid those who have been notified being able to proceed without consequences, I think we have to take steps, defense policy spokesman Nils-Ole Foshaug at Labour told NRK.

He proposed that people who had been notified could not be promoted until the notification case was over. You also shouldn’t get a business letter, a form of final certificate, before the case has been processed, he advises.

Spokesperson for the Chief of Defence, Lieutenant Colonel Vegard Norstad Finberg, said that several processes were under way to improve the handling of notification cases.

– The Norwegian Defense Force thanks Nils-Ole Foshaug for the input. The input, in line with other constructive proposals received by the Norwegian Armed Forces, will be processed and taken into account in future work, he said.

One of the largest unions in the Armed Forces, on the other hand, is skeptical of the proposal to deny promotions to people with whistle-blowing cases against them.

– I fundamentally disagree. The main reason is that it largely violates the legal principle that you must be innocent until proven guilty, says confederation leader Torbjørn Bongo of the Norwegian Association of Officers and Specialists (NOF).

Therefore, he believes that it could be discussed whether there should be a middle ground – where the notification issue can be included in the overall assessment.
