On Saturday, the talents of Bodø and 44 other teams competed in the finals of the FIRST LEGO League in Scandinavia. The Techno Builders from the Mørkvedmarka school received the superintendent’s award during today’s final, and were praised for their phenomenal effort by the jury and organizers.

– High levels and very sharp minds, says Liv Ims, project manager at heroes Equinor Tomorrow about Techno Builders.

Huge cheers during today’s Scandinavian final in the FIRST LEGO League, the world’s largest science and technology competition, when more than 500 children and young people were finally able to meet again for the Scandinavian physical final for the first time since 2019.

The FIRST Scandinavia behind the competition, which with support from Equinor is working to increase young people’s interest in technology and science to become the engineers and scientists of tomorrow.

– Exactly Bodø students and other young people with the extra equipment and encouragement we need in the future, says Silje Kumeus, concept manager at FIRST Scandinavia.

Although the day’s intense competition did not end with the flag going all the way to the top for the Bodø team, the young team was able to smile broadly at receiving the supervisor’s award, and praise, applause and cheers from both the judges, organizers and spectators.

Brilliant with hybrid aircraft solutions
In November last year the impressive programmers and their innovative projects accumulated the most points, and thus came out on top in the regional finals at FIRST LEGO League in Salten. With this year’s theme “Cargo Connect”, the team has been looking for the best transportation solutions, where the team from Bodø researched a hybrid aircraft model.

– That children and young people engage in science and programming is important and determines the social challenges of the future. Science can be both demanding and complex, but today Bodø’s Techno Builder has shown that it’s also possible to have fun. The team is made up of some very sharp minds, and it is these heroes who will make a big difference in the future, says Liv Ims, project manager at heroes Equinor Tomorrow.

The 19 students at the Mørkvedmarka school at 6A were able to celebrate their brilliant efforts and the tutor award today, for which the team nominated their tutor, Mufrid Krilic. Because of this, the gang from Bodø can go home with their heads held high as worthy finalists.

– Mufrid has taught us to believe in ourselves, and he is very good at inspiring us as a team, so we do our best. He saw everyone, and was good at bragging about us, the students said about their teacher.

Encouraging more people to explore the universe of science
The goal of the FIRST LEGO League, hosted by FIRST Scandinavia and supported by Equinor Morgendagens Helter, is to show how fun, educational and rewarding science can be. Kumeus is constantly impressed by the enthusiasm and creativity of young people. Now he hopes more will follow to stimulate future researchers.

– When the assignment of the year was announced, the team had to be creative and innovative to find good solutions for challenges in transportation. It’s been really interesting to see the good ideas the team has come up with, which are solutions that adults haven’t thought of yet. These children and youth are our future, and I think we can safely say that the future is bright, said Kumeus.

After the final round, it was finally RoadSnack from Skjervøy who was able to decorate himself with this year’s Champions of the FIRST LEGO League title. Thus the team gets the opportunity to represent Norway and Skjervøy in the global final which will be held in the USA in June 2022.

Kumeus concludes by encouraging teachers and students to take part in the FIRST LEGO League, for a learning experience they will never forget. Registration for this year’s season begins on April 1.
