Norway’s best table tennis player, Borgar Haug, took another step. After the season ends, the 20-year-old from Halmstad will join German champions Borussia Düsseldorf.
Last week, the Oslo boy signed for reigning champions Germany, who have won table tennis the Bundesliga 32 times and the Champions League seven times. Wednesday confirmed Borussia Düsseldorf signing.
– Europe’s best club of all time. It really hurts, Borgar Haug told VG. This week he has had several training sessions, medical tests and contract negotiations in Germany.
– We look forward to Borgar’s arrival. “We have signed another young and very talented player who completes our team in a first-class way,” said manager Andreas Preuss.
– This is a sensation and great news for Borgar himself and for Norwegian table tennis, reports the Norwegian Table Tennis Association and refers to it as “shock transition”.
He moved to Sweden at the age of 15 to develop himself. Last year, Borgar Haug decided on the Swedish championship. He has a clear goal of joining the world’s elite in a sport which has 300 million active athletes.
– This is a great opportunity for me, says Borgar Haug, who has signed a one-year contract with Borussia Düsseldorf.
The Norwegian spent his freshman year at high school in Halmstad but has since focused on table tennis full-time. Haug won’t reveal much about the finances of the contract.
– I have the opportunity to earn good money here in the future, he said.
At his best, he was ranked number 152 senior rank. He is now ranked number 293 in the world. He joins a team with very good players such as defending European champion Dang Qui (11th), Timo Boll (15) and Anton Källberg (22).
The 42-year-old Boll is a German legend with 20 EC gold, six WC silvers and two Olympic silvers.
– I had the opportunity to be in the hall and train with them every day at the German national training center. You will be looking for a better chance than this for a long time, said Borgar Haug and prepared that it would be difficult for them to join the team, which consists of three players in every game.
Next weekend, Borgar Haug will play NM at Fornebu outside Oslo. He would go out and defend his NM title last year in singles, doubles and team.
