The wider KDU-ČSL leadership approved the candidacy of Marek Výborny, current chairman of the KDU-ČSL parliamentary club, for the post of Minister of Agriculture. Last week, Zdeněk Nekula resigned from his post. President Petr Pavel appointed Výborny on Thursday, June 29. On the same day, Prime Minister Petr Fiala will inaugurate him.

“I appreciate the KDU-ČSL National Committee for supporting me and confirming my candidacy for the post of Minister of Agriculture. I accept this challenge with humility and responsibility towards the professional and lay agricultural community, towards society and the entire government, and above all towards all the citizens of our country.” said Marek Výborný, chairman of the KDU-ČSL parliamentary club and the party’s candidate for Minister of Agriculture, after the committee’s decision.

“I consider changing the communication style between the ministry and farmers as a top priority. I also want to focus on supporting the interests of Czech farmers here and in the EU, ensuring self-sufficiency and food security, developing ecological agriculture and better water management. Big challenges for me are also the restoration of forests after the bark beetle disaster, the sustainability of Czech agriculture, and the maintenance of soil and landscapes.” added Marek Výborný.

“I would like to thank Zdenek Nekul for the work he is doing at the ministry. He handled the leadership of the Council of the European Union brilliantly and was able to protect Czech farmers from the impacts of expensive energy. At the same time, I am very much looking forward to the government’s cooperation with Mark Výborny and I am sure that thanks to his management skills, he will be able to manage the resort effectively. He proved his ability to orient himself very quickly to a new issue, for example through his work in the field of eradicating foreclosures, which resulted in two years of successful Summer of Mercy events. I am pleased that the national committee confirmed the candidacy of the KDU-ČSL president and, thanks to the president’s willingness, we will be able to make the appointment as early as next week on Thursday.” Said Minister of Labor and Social Affairs and Chair of KDU-ČSL Marian Jurečka.
