– Overall, this is a championship that we are disappointed with and must take responsibility for. “I want to apologize to all our supporters who expected something more,” Klaveness told NRK.

Now they have to find out what went wrong in the toilet. The football president said that an evaluation of Norway’s World Cup performance, described by many as a disappointment, would begin on Thursday.

– We have to be honest with ourselves and find out why we don’t get enough energy and power in the match. At least the first game really sets the tone. “We have to realize that in three of the last four championships we performed lower than we expected, both for the confederation and the general public,” he told NRK.

Different goals

Weak performances and internal unrest ensured a turbulent group stage for Norway. The biggest setback occurred in the match against hosts New Zealand, where the national team lost 0-1.

In the round of 16 it was stopped against Japan.

– We have to be really honest with ourselves in finding some good keys to reach a higher level, says Klaveness.

The football president believes that the evaluation should be completed in August. Everything must be evaluated starting from the federation, individual players, coaches, to support staff.

He explained clearly what the association’s goals were for the national team, but at the same time said that the players in this championship did not want the same goals.

– In the NFF strategy plan it is stated that we will win medals in the current strategy period, but the players themselves want to have the goal of qualifying from the group. So right now, Norwegian football is setting higher goals for the team than the team itself. It’s okay in one championship, because the team has to set its own goals. In the next strategy period, we need to go in with a very clear understanding of where we are, Klaveness said.

He emphasized that Japan’s elimination from Japan was not a scandal, but that Norway was also lucky on its way to the round of 16. He emphasized that Norway must beat New Zealand and not lose 0-8 to England like the national team did at the EC. He wants Norway to be a clear contender in the championship.

– Where are we two years from now, where are we four years from now, and are we behind? We’ve done that in recent years and we’re not going to do that. “We will attack,” Klaveness said.

– Difficult days

Caroline Graham Hansen caused a stir during the championship when she made sharp statements against the national team management after the Switzerland match, in which she was sent off from the start.

Klaveness believes it doesn’t matter whether Hege Riise is safe or not after the World Cup disappointment. Riise did not get his turn to enter the team in his first championship as manager of the Norwegian national team.

– If it were, I wouldn’t be discussing it with the media in the days before the evaluation.
