“Her name is Armita Geravand and she is only 16 years old. She is in a coma and hospitalized due to head injuries after she was allegedly attacked by the Iranian regime’s hijab-wearing police in the Tehran metro,” wrote the well-known Iranian activist, Masih Alinejad. X, formerly Twitter.
– She was physically attacked by authorities at Shohada station because they believed she was not wearing the mandatory hijab, according to the Iranian Human Rights Organization Hengawbased on BBC.
Tight guard
On Sunday, the 16-year-old was allegedly assaulted. Hengaw wrote that the teenager is now under tight guard at a hospital in the Iranian capital. Her family is said to have lost their mobile phones to prevent the spread of images of the young girl, according to the organization.
“Armita’s health has not improved and she is still in a coma,” Hengaw wrote, Wednesday afternoon.
From the official Iranian side, it was reported that Geravand fainted in the subway. Iranian television channel CCTV showed images of him being taken out of the metro.
Tehran metro chief Masoud Dorosti told Iranian news agency IRNA that their surveillance images showed no signs of verbal or physical conflict between passengers and other people, reported Reuters.
Reuters news agency has spoken to two prominent Iranian human rights activists, who said the teenager was arrested by Tehran’s underground agents for violating hijab requirements.
– We are following the case closely. She is in a coma in the intensive care unit and her condition is critical, one activist said, while another activist said that the girl’s parents were prohibited from publishing photos of the girl.
– His heart is broken
Dagbladet met Iranian journalist, writer and human rights activist Masih Alinejad, when she was at the Storting under the auspices of the Høyre women’s network in 2020. Alinejad is a strong critic of the Iranian regime and lives in exile in the US.
He runs the organization My Hidden Freedom, which is a campaign to eliminate the mandatory hijab in Iran. Alinejad has received a number of awards for her work, including: woman of the year by TIME magazine.
Shaking the world: – We are scared
Now he wrote the following on social media:
“My heart is broken. Now we are on the anniversary of #MahsaAmini’s murder by the morality police. Then the horrific image of #ArminaGaravand, the 16-year-old lying in a coma in Iran after a confrontation with Iran’s morality police, emerged. I cried…”.
Alinejad is following the case closely, and continues to provide updates and opinions:
– We, women, are the biggest enemies of the Islamic Republic. That’s why they kill women every day, by forcing them to hide their true selves. As long as the gender apartheid regime remains in power in Iran, more women will be beaten or killed for showing their hair. We must end the Islamic Republic, wrote Alinejad.
– Unbearable
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock wrote the following on X, formerly Twitter:
“A young woman in #Iran is fighting for her life again. Just because she showed her hair on the subway. This is unbearable.”
The Iranian regime hardly wants a repeat of what happened a year ago, when 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in police custody, after being tortured to death by morality police after wearing the hijab in an “inappropriate” manner.
The death of the young woman sparked massive protests and demonstrations against the regime. Both in Iran and elsewhere in the world. Dagbladet also has a leader in this case, one year after his death, on September 17 this year.
