MVRDV’s winning proposal will expand the airport area at the northern location with three new airport buildings. On the one hand, it will be a building that expands Terminal 1 with a new security control center, new business areas and VIP rooms. Studio MRDV states on its website that the design also includes a vertiport. In addition, a building with a hotel, conference center and parking lot will be added to the public part. Prague Airport said the new buildings will give the airport increased operational flexibility and other options to easily adapt to future expansion and redevelopment. According to MVRDV, these three buildings should define the roadway of the new airport.

At the top of the designed facade, there will be a large format satellite image of the Czech Republic. The printed glass is also supposed to contain photovoltaics, which will generate some of the energy consumed by the building as part of sustainability. At the same time, there should be light elements that display important information. The total usable area of the new building is 83,000 m2.

Jiří Kraus, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Prague Airport, believes that cooperation with a globally active architecture studio is a promise for Prague Václav Havel Airport to build new world-class architecture with an emphasis on sustainability. “This competition attracted extraordinary interest from architects, including from abroad. The centralized security control objects in Terminal 1, together with the solutions developed in part for the expansion of Terminal 2, will form the basis of a large-scale mosaic of strategically important projects to complete the increase in airport terminal capacity.” Jiří Kraus said.

According to Wina Maas, founding partner of Dutch studio MVRDV, most airport experiences lack a connection to a particular place or a sense of belonging on the part of the passenger. According to Maas, this must change in Prague. “As you pass through the security check, you will be surrounded by the greenness of the Czech landscape – in the ceiling depicting it, and in the surrounding space, where there are plants typical of the Czech biotope. Such experiences will give you a sense of peace and belonging.” Maas said. Esther Kromhout, Director of NACO, stated the following regarding the Prague Ruzyne Airport proposal: “We are based on the principles of sustainability and future building and use unique design elements that will fully absorb passengers as they pass through Prague’s Václav Havel Airport.” We can only hope that the promises of an attractive building and attractive interior will be achieved during its implementation.
Another winning team in the Prague Airport architecture competition was a domestic team Perspective Studiowho submitted a proposal prepared in collaboration with a Norwegian architectural office Nordic Architecture Officeand then the office Architect Aulík Fišer.
