Dutch top league matches are on hold – players need to be revived
The match between AZ Alkmaar and Nijmegen in the Dutch honors division was interrupted after visiting team striker Bas Dost fell and appeared to be lifeless.
The episode occurred in extra time with the visitors leading 2-1. Dost, who scored the first goal of the match, fell and collapsed. Players from both teams stood with arms folded as he received medical treatment.
After several painful minutes, news came that Dost was conscious. He was carried on a stretcher and raised his arms towards the audience. Supporters of both teams chanted his name.
– Bass had been gone for a while, but they brought him back. The medics from both teams did an excellent job and they deserve credit for the speed with which they intervened, said Nijmegen general manager Wilco van Schaik, according to NOS.
Dost’s father was present at the stadium and was kept informed by van Schaik.
– He told the whole family. Fortunately, now there are positive messages that can be conveyed. Bas is conscious and looking better.
There were five minutes of stoppage time remaining when the horrific incident occurred. The Nijmegen players admitted that they did not want to continue playing and were supported by the home team. Thus the match did not continue.
– It was very quiet in the dressing room, but the fist that Bas raised in the air said a lot, said van Schaik.
Lars Olden Larsen is Dost’s clubmate. He played from the start, but was replaced in the 63rd minute. David Møller Wolfe played the entire match for AZ. (NTB)
