J. Sellin: in the 1990s, there was practically no institutionalized history policy | dzie.pl

Throughout the 1990s, institutionalized historical policies were virtually non-existent; the first institution built from scratch and dedicated to Polish history in 1999 was the Institute of National Remembrance – said Jarosław Sellin, deputy head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, during the Niepokorni Niezłomni Wyklęci Film Festival in Gdynia.

On Saturday, Deputy Minister of Culture and National Heritage Jarosław Sellin took part in the discussion panel “New memory institutions” during the Niepokorni Niezłomni Wyklęci Film Festival in Gdynia.

“During the 1990s, institutionalized historical policies were virtually non-existent. At that time, post-communists and liberals were in power. Communists say we choose the future, we are not interested in the past, because finding out the truth about the past is very risky for them. “The first institution built from scratch and dedicated to Polish history in 1999, thanks to the Electoral Solidarity Action government, was the Institute of National Remembrance,” he said.

“We can see the good impact of the systematic work of this kind of institution for almost 25 years. “I can talk a lot about how our social awareness of Polish history has changed thanks to this systematically and ambitiously working institution,” said Deputy Minister Sellin.

“Today, these modern museums are not uninteresting places, like +don’t touch the exhibits+, +wear sandals+, but they are very interesting places where you can spend the whole day. Not only permanent exhibitions, but also temporary exhibitions, seminars, conferences, debates, magazines, books and documentaries are published regularly. This is what allows us to carry out this historic policy not from one anniversary celebration to another, and between these anniversaries nothing happens for 364 days, only every day. “This is the strength of historical policies implemented institutionally,” he said.

Deputy Minister Sellin announced that on Monday, on the occasion of the National Day of Remembrance of German Pomeranian Crime Victims, information about the construction of the Szpęgów Museum will be officially announced. “We will have two such museums, which are branches of the Stutthof Museum and will spread knowledge about Pomeranian Crime,” he stressed.
