An emotional Díaz decided to play Brazil with his father in the stands
With his recently released father in the crowd, Luis Díaz scored both goals as Colombia won 2–1 against Brazil.
It was an emotional end to a match, one in which Brazil led for most of the match.
Gabriel Martinelli made the score 1-0 after only four minutes of the game, but the end of the match was like something out of a Hollywood film.
In the space of four minutes, Díaz scored twice and provided a tearful experience for those in attendance.
Díaz’s parents were kidnapped on October 28. The mother was immediately released. The father, Luis Manuel Díaz, was held captive for twelve days by the Colombian guerilla group ELN. They were both in the stands on Thursday.
In the 74th minute, Díaz took to the air using Yaser Asprilla’s cross and headed the ball straight into the goal.
A clearly moved Díaz was greeted by teammates and coaches.
Four minutes later, Díaz came back again, this time connecting with James Rodríguez’s cross. Once again, Diaz used his head and poked the ball behind Brazilian goalkeeper Alisson.
TV images showed the father crying after his son’s second goal and being greeted by those closest to him in the stands.
With this victory, Colombia moved up to third place in qualifying with nine points. Argentina tops the standings with 12 points, two points ahead of Uruguay. (NTB)
