Optimism after plastics negotiations in Canada
The world’s first agreement to reduce plastic pollution is within reach and will probably be adopted before the end of the year, Canada believes after a week of negotiations.
– I am very optimistic and confident we can reach an agreement by the end of the year that will end plastic pollution by 2040, said Canadian MP Julie Dabrusin after talks in Ottawa ended on Tuesday evening local time.
Since last week, representatives from 175 countries have participated in the fourth and penultimate round of talks in an effort to implement an international agreement to limit plastic pollution.
– Important progress has been made in Canada and there is overwhelming support for a strong agreement. The big question is whether the majority’s demand for a strong agreement will be achieved, or whether we will end up with an agreement diluted through voluntary action. The Norwegian government must now do what they can to build on progress until the next negotiation meeting and ensure that we get a global ban, clear requirements for product design and strong funding so that developing countries are also able to implement the many steps needed to stop plastic waste . , Eirik Lindebjerg told NRK.
He led WWF’s efforts to create a global and legally binding plastics agreement, and has been following negotiations in Canada.
The final round of talks will be held in South Korea in December. Meanwhile, a series of consultations will be held to prepare the entry.
