The world’s largest cruise ship begins its maiden voyage. It’s huge

Royal Caribbean ships include seven swimming pools, the largest water park outside land with six water slides, a theater, an ice rink and more than 40 restaurants and bars. The space is divided into eight districts, each with its own theme. One of them, for example, is Central Park, which is a green area with living plants, wrote the Reuters office. The Hideaway section offers the first “suspension” infinity pool at sea.

The ship is designed for 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew. To put things into perspective, this means, for example, that the entire population of Nové Město na Morava could fit inside. This floating giant weighs 250,000 tons and according to the company, it took 900 days to build.

Concerns of environmentalists

The ship was officially christened on Tuesday with the help of soccer legend Lionel Messi and his teammates from Inter Miami. “Icon of the Seas is the culmination of more than 50 years of dreaming, innovation and fulfilling our mission to responsibly provide the world’s best vacation experiences,” said Jason Liberty, company president.

The ship is 365 meters long.

This giant is powered by six engines. The ship can also use liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel, which cruise ship operators say reduces greenhouse gas and sulfur emissions. But some environmentalists worry that LNG-powered ships will actually increase methane emissions. Additionally, passengers on planes are said to produce up to eight times more carbon than on the ground.
