The current Masaryk Square with an area of 9,500 square meters is crossed by street 28. října. The square is dominated by the Column of Mary, first installed in 1702, and the statue of St. Mary. Florian (1763). Since 2007, a fountain has been built on the sidewalk and illuminated at night.
In the northern part of Masaryk Square, the exhibition Moments of 100 Years of the Czech Press Office was held from 7 to 29 July. This exhibition tours and documents events in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic, considering events in Ostrava from 28 October 1918 to early 2018. This exhibition is particularly concerned with the events of the Eighth. It was installed on thirty wide area panels, and thus on sixty information boards.
Visitors to Masaryk Square can get more information at the Ostrava Museum, where the exhibition Watch Out, Birds Will Fly will run until September 2. From September to December, the museum is preparing a major exhibition entitled First Republic.
The square is also a good center for relaxation and entertainment. Since the start of the holiday season, there is a sports complex called Písek in the center, which is managed by the Municipal District of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz. The beach playground is used daily. The men’s and women’s beach volleyball tournaments are underway.
On Monday, July 23, starting at 7 pm, the second holiday workshop and demonstration of Argentine tango takes place here. This event is organized by Tango Argentino Ostrava. Another dance event is being prepared for August 17 at the beach playground on Masaryk Square.
The Beach rugby Ostrava 2018 sports event is planned for Saturday, July 28. The tournament will start at 10am and end at 7pm with the winner announced. The organizers prepared a companion program. Refreshing drinks are offered at Laura’s coffee stand.
