00:01. Meduza: Torecko residents flee the city under siege by the Russians

Residents of the town of Toretsk in Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine are hastily fleeing the town, which is under constant shelling by Russian troops; fewer than 5,000 civilians remain there at the moment, the independent Russian portal Meduza reported on Friday.

Toretsk, located near Horlivka and controlled since 2014 by Russia and so-called separatists from Donbas, had a population of about 35,000 a decade ago. In early July, Russian troops launched a surprise attack on this sector of the front. The Ukrainian army sent additional forces to the devastated town, and local civilians tried to escape under enemy fire, Meduza reported.

The website published Torecko’s photos, taken by, among others, war correspondents over the past few days. Anatolia Agency.

Recently, the pace of Russian advances near Toretsk has slowed, but the invading forces have intensified their attacks on Pokrov, where they have captured the village and the Prohres railway station. Capturing the town could mean a potential disruption of supplies to Ukrainian military groups in Toretsk and Chasiv Yar, another town under intense Russian attack, Meduza said.

In a statement on Friday morning, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Army announced that over the past 24 hours, the aggressor forces had launched 11 attacks in the direction of Toretsk. The head of the Donetsk Oblast authorities, Vadym Filashkin, reported that one civilian was killed in Toretsk on Thursday, and 229 people, including 26 children, were evacuated from Donbas cities located near the front line that day.
