Nyland’s Sevilla fall after dramatic final minutes
On Friday, Norwegian international goalkeeper Ørjan Håskjold Nyland played his first home game for Sevilla this season. There, the Andalusian club had a tough time against visitors Villarreal.
Early in the match, Villarreal easily broke through the home team’s defense. Nyland was standing far away, and was unable to prevent Arnaut Danjuma’s shot on goal.
Soon after, Juanlu thought he had equalised for the home side, but the goal was ruled out for offside.
The visitors continued to dominate for much of the first half but were unable to increase their lead. Nyland also made a crucial save.
The home fans finally got something to cheer about when Dodi Lukebakio slotted the ball into the left corner past Villarreal goalkeeper Diego Conde in first-half stoppage time to level the score at 1-1 at half-time.
Midway through the second half, Santi Comesaña put the ball into the net behind the unmarked Norwegian goalkeeper. However, after a VAR check, the goal was also ruled out for offside.
– From a Norwegian point of view, we should be happy that it was caught by VAR, because the goalkeeper’s play was not very clear, commented Robin Grov on TV 2 Sport Premium.
Villarreal piled on the pressure throughout the first half, but it was the hosts who were most hungry for a winner towards the end. Sevilla’s Kelechi Iheanacho came close to scoring on the stroke of full-time, but then the game changed dramatically five minutes into stoppage time. Ayoze Pérez fired past Nyland to seal the points for Villarreal.
It was Sevilla’s first defeat after two rounds of La Liga, and Villarreal’s first win of the season. The two sides were level at half-time.
