On Monday, June 24, the newly renovated Máj shopping area in the center of Prague will open to the public. In addition to shops, people can also look forward to galleries, entertainment or educational spaces, or cafes with views.

The newly opened shopping center will include a supermarket, pharmacy, drugstore and wine bar. There will be a multifunctional entertainment area on the third and fourth floors, the fifth floor will cater to parents with young children, and the sixth floor will be dedicated to schools and kindergartens, where students can learn interesting things about the history of Prague.

Now the final work is being completed on the shopping center. The reconstruction was carried out in consultation with the original authors, architects Martin Rajniš and John Eisler. According to previous information, the project also took into account the advice of other experts in the field of historical preservation and urban planning.

The facade of the house will be decorated with the work of sculptor David Černý – two moving butterfly sculptures measuring several meters, whose bodies will imitate fire-fighting aircraft. Thus, this work should be a tribute to the Czechoslovak aviators who fought in the Second World War.

The Máj department store is an example of modern architecture of the second half of the 20th century. It was built between 1970-74 and follows the interwar functionalist building with elements of modern architecture. The building was built on the corner where the Neo-Gothic Špork Palace stood until 1939, and after its demolition became a temporary wooden pavilion. The new building was built according to the project of the architect SIAL Liberec. The interiors are in the high-tech style concept. In 2006, the Ministry of Culture declared the house a cultural monument.
