00:01. NATO chief: decision on Kiev’s use of long-range missiles is the responsibility of each country

Any specific decisions about Ukraine’s use of Western long-range missiles on Russian territory must be made by each of the allies, outgoing NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with London’s LBC radio on Monday.

Each ally has the right to make specific decisions about how their weapons can be used. Allies have different policies on this.

said Stoltenberg.

He added that it was most important that NATO members consult closely with each other on this issue.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has long called on the United States and other Western allies to allow Ukrainian forces to use long-range missiles issued to them to strike targets deep inside Russia to increase pressure on Moscow and persuade it to end the war.

Washington has so far resisted issuing such permission, fearing an escalation that could lead to direct conflict with Russia. But US Secretary of State Antony Blinken pledged in Kiev last week to “swiftly” consider the Ukrainian military’s request.

The US delivered a small number of ATACMS systems to Ukraine last September, which have a range of about 270 km.
