With Boris Johnson on his way out of 10 Downing Street, speculation is rife about who will take over as prime minister and party leader.
Within the party, it has been fairly open for several months that there has been positioning and tactics around who will take the seat with Johnson’s tripping exit.
According to professor of British-American studies Atle Libæk Wold at the University of Oslo, the whole team is ready to replace him.
– Many are positioning themselves, but there is no clear successor, Wold told NTB.
Ben Wallace
One of the clearest out best in one YouGov . Survey among the Tories, is Defense Secretary Ben Wallace (52). The former officer wins both in terms of the number of votes and everything one-on-one poll against other candidates.
based on Sky News its popularity has increased recently, as a result of its handling of the war in Ukraine.
Penny Mordaunt
Another potential candidate is UK Commerce Secretary Penny Mordaunt, who came in second in the survey. However, it has drawn attention that Mordaunt’s dismissal was not among the more than 50 layoffs that have flowed since Tuesday night, writes The Guardian.
As a new leader is set to be elected to the party in 2019, Mordaunts was among those backing Johnson’s rival in the election, Jeremy Hunt. He was also among the ministers highly critical of Johnson’s role at Partygate, “and appears to have put himself in the top spot”, the paper wrote.
Rishi Sunak
In third place in the survey is Rishi Sunak, 42, who until two days ago was Finance Minister, before he suddenly stepped down. Until recently, he had been considered the most likely candidate for Johnson’s successor.
A poll conducted by Sky News in January revealed that nearly half of the Tories thought Sunak would be a better head of government than Johnson, and at least garnered more votes.
But Sunak is also not free from scandal.
Sunak and his wife Akshata Murthy are in bad weather after it was discovered that multi-billionaire Murthy legally failed to pay a giant tax bill, NTB wrote.
Sunak was also one of several politicians who were fined after Partygate.
– We don’t like it either
Liz Truss
Secretary of State Liz Truss has also been voted a hot name, and is doing well among her party peers in opinion polls. In the YouGov survey, Truss came in fourth. Truss has been in parliament since 2010, and since then his ranking has improved tremendously, Sky News wrote.
According to The Guardian, Truss was the first female foreign minister among the Tories.
He chose to remain in his position while many of his party mates resigned, something The Guardian wrote may be a possible attempt to rally support in his fight for leadership positions among Johnson’s supporters in the party.
Truss has distinguished himself among the grassroots Conservative Party for his freedom-loving and patriotic rhetoric. Security previously written.
Emphasize own business
The foreign minister also imitated former party leader and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher by being photographed in a tank with a scarf on her head, writes The Guardian.
Truss also held senior positions under David Cameron and Theresa May.
Sajid Javid
Former Health Minister Sajid Javid, who resigned at about the same time as Sunak on Tuesday evening, has also been named as a potential successor.
He also ran in 2019, when Johnson ultimately won.
The experienced politician has held a number of tough government positions.
In the YouGov survey, however, he ended up in 10th place.
Priti Patel
Home Secretary Priti Patel also appeared among the names of potential heirs after Johnson on British media lists.
Patel is described by The Guardian as a controversial figure in British politics, but popular among his own voters for his tough immigration policies.
However, he has received strong criticism for his handling of asylum seekers traveling to Britain by small boat across the English Channel.
Patel stood firmly behind Johnson when a new leader was to be elected in 2019, and during his reign has been one of his closest supporters.
More recent
Sky News also cited Justice and Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab, Johnson’s rival in the 2019 leadership election Jeremy Hunt, former Secretary of State Michael Gove, former whipping chief Mark Harper and Attorney General Suella Braverman as possible candidates to replace Johnson.
Has done a lot of damage
The channel also believes that Tom Tugendhat – a well-known critic of Johnson, and leader of one of the committees in the House of Commons, wants to take over. The same goes for newly appointed British finance minister Nadim Zahawi.
On Financial time top of the list are Sunak, Javid, Truss and Mordaunt, Tugendhat and Zahawi
One of the candidates already running for the new Tories leader is government lawyer Suella Braverman, wrote NTB. He came out publicly this week and asked Johnson to step down. At the same time, he was promoting himself as a candidate in a possible leadership battle.
– But so far few have come out publicly and run, Professor Atle Libæk Wold told NTB.
