Last match Federer played over a year ago. On 7 July 2021, in the quarter-finals Wimbledon, lost to Hubert Hurkacz 3:6, 6:7 (4-7), 0-6. Since then, the Swiss has struggled with a knee injury, which has kept him out for months.
Due to the long hiatus, Federer is not in the final rankings ATPwhere he was the leader for 237 consecutive weeks (310 weeks total). The Swiss realized that his successful career was almost over.
– I like to win, but if you’re not competitive, it’s better to quit. Tennis is part of my identity, but not the whole. “I know that careers don’t last forever and that success can also be achieved outside of sport,” Federer told Dutch daily Algemeen Dagblad.
However, the Swiss saw the advantage of the current situation. One of them is the free time that Federer can devote to his family. – I don’t think I need tennis. Now I’m happy with the little things, for example when my son does something right, or my daughter gives me good grades from school, she admits.
It is not known when Federer will finally retire from the sport. The 20-time Grand Slam tournament winner, however, announced that after recovering from injury, he would give himself another chance and return to court.
