Kazakhstan’s surprise winner at Wimbledon – big favorite Jabeur knocked out of court
Jelena Rybakina surprised everyone and claimed her first Grand Slam title by beating Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur 2-1 in sets in Saturday’s final at Wimbledon.
After going through a tough first set in the final against Jabeur, Rybakina fought well in the last two sets and won the match 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Jabeur, who on Saturday became the first African player to reach a Grand Slam final since 1959, broke three of Rybakina’s serve in the first set and ended up landing 6-3.
However, Rybakina responded brilliantly in the second set and secured the third set 6-2. The Kazakh also opened the third set and decided decisively.
The Russian-born 23-year-old distanced herself from her favorite Jabeur and was finally able to stretch her arms and celebrate her first Grand Slam title.
Both Rybakina and Jabeur played their first Grand Slam finals on Saturday. The former reached the quarter-finals of last year’s edition of Wimbledon as the longest he has come in at the tournament’s most generous.
Jabeur, on the other hand, have two quarter-finals of Wimbledon (2021) and Australian Open (2020) respectively as their best results from a Grand Slam tournament. (NTB)
