Carlsen came with a big smile when he met the press after winning his fifth World Cup title.
– That’s a little weird. I really care about balance and keeping it safe. “He calculated completely wrong when he let me sacrifice quality,” Carlsen told NRK.
He was happy, even though it had almost become a habit to become world champion.
– It’s been a few times now, but of course it’s a lot of fun. “It’s a relief to make it happen, and it’s a pleasure to make it happen in a way that’s a little more convincing than any other time,” said world champion Norway.
Now, as mentioned, he has five World Cup titles, and he has been world number one for ten years. But he was silent about what would happen to the long chess in the future.
– We’ll see what happens, said Carlsen.
But the Norwegian admits he has much more to achieve in his career.
– I think there’s still a bit to go on. “I haven’t finished my chess career yet,” said the 31-year-old.
VG pointed out that after the World Cup in Sochi he said he had won two titles and had five remaining. Avisa asks if this is still the goal.
– We’ll see, he answered quietly.
– Got fewer chances than expected
Nepomnyachi acknowledged that some of the mistakes made during the World Cup were very important. However, he hopes Carlsen also makes blisters.
– It’s very intense, and I got fewer chances than I expected. I overlooked some simple things that I would never overlook in lightning chess. I have to find out what happened and fix it, said “Nepo”.
Carlsen thinks he sees similarities to other World Cup games.
– I think this is most similar to the one against Anand. Initially nervous, but after the first victory the story is almost the same. What can I say? At one point, he failed to show his best chess. It’s a shame for joy. “I think it happens when you’re in a difficult situation,” Carlsen said.
Think one party decide
He acknowledged that game six, which lasted nearly eight hours, was crucial to his way forward at the World Cup.
– I feel I was concentrated and made a few mistakes. “It’s going to be a decisive game, and after that I don’t have to do more than play solid and watch him try things that give bad results,” said Carlsen.
He admitted that it was not the toughest World Cup win of his career.
– In the second World Cup, this can happen quickly. But as it turned out, I was not tested, he said.
When it came to the road ahead in long chess, he didn’t have a really ready plan.
Huge loss cover
The game starts evenly and relatively cautiously, with only the player’s runners being ejected early. “Nepo” started with Italy’s opening, but there were two players who equalized.
But then the extraordinary mistake of Russia occurred.
– Is it possible he did it again? It seemed like a tremendous mistake, said Bae.
He moved the farmer to g3, and thus Carlsen was able to beat his horse to “Nepo” at e3 without much consequence.
After winning, he now received a cash prize of 11 million kroner. Russia receives “only” about 8 million kroner.
At 7.5 against 3.5, it would have been a brackish win for Carlsen, and after a few mistakes from “Nepo” there is little doubt about who should take the title.
– This is a historically devastating victory, Bae thought.
Today’s win means Carlsen have gone 27 World Cup games without defeat. During 22 matches he has met Sergei Karjakin, Fabiano Caruana and “Nepo”.
