Fireworks, Roman candles, volcanoes, but maybe also rocking balls or fireworks. The 21 kinds of fireworks disappeared once and for all from Billa’s chain rack. The company made the announcement on World Animal Day.
The demand for fireworks is high in the Czech Republic and of course highest around Christmas and New Year. According to estimates by the Czech Association of Nature Protectors, the seller’s annual sales reach one billion crowns.
Animal rights activists have long opposed fireworks. More than half of Czechs live with pets, who suffer from panic and psychological trauma during the annual New Year’s celebrations.
Some pets can be helped by the presence of humans. But wildlife also experiences traumatic moments during the few minutes of celebration. Their savior knew about it.
More than half of the injured animals were eventually returned to the wild after treatment by rescuers. However, in highly stressful situations such as those caused by explosions, it often ends badly. This unlucky goose, for example, two years ago, during the New Year’s fireworks in Prague, he hit the tram line in a panic.
More specifically, there are hundreds of animals a year that are injured due to the careless handling of fireworks. Billa also contributed to the operation of the rescue station that looked after them. The operation of these stations in the Czech Republic costs about 70 million crowns per year.
