Usually, by-elections in the US do not attract much interest from the international community.
Typically, the debates between candidates for senator and governor revolve around national and regional issues that have nothing to do with world events.
But there is no such thing as “normal” in this country, which has been in an existential crisis since Donald Trump took office. Moreover, for a long time it seemed that after these congressional and state elections, America would take another step towards the abyss.
How strong is Trump’s influence?
That is why the eyes of the whole world are fixed on November 8 to the United States. The troubling question is whether Donald Trump and his supporters will be able to further undermine the democratic system and place racists and right-wing extremists in positions in the institutions that will determine the legitimacy of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election.
As a result, the question is whether Donald Trump can continue his destructive policies outside the White House that culminated on January 6, 2021 in the stampede of his supporters on the Capitol in Washington.
The most powerful ruling party in history
Donald Trump has not yet achieved his goals. The fears that large-scale political responsibility would fall on the US and its supporters did not materialize. The opposite is true: for decades, no ruling party has performed as well as President Joe Biden’s Democrats in this midterm election.
The first opinion polls show that the people of the United States are very concerned about economic issues. Also in the United States, housing prices are rising sharply in some areas, inflation is high and there is high concern about the future of the country.
The poll also shows that many Americans care deeply about the state of their democracy — and that they have come to understand that not voting benefits bigots. Therefore, the turnout is very high.
Newbie voters want to protect the environment
It was surprising that a large number of young people, participating in elections for the first time, voted. For them, the fight against the climate catastrophe is also very important in the US. And this is a topic that almost all Republicans mock.
All of this, including the abortion rights debate, has halted Republican Trump’s march to victory.
All of this strengthens President Biden, even though with the possibility of losing his majority in Congress to the Democrats, it certainly won’t be easy for him to govern.
But can Republicans succeed?
The big question is what these results mean for Republicans. Will he be able to reverse this trend? Now there is evidence that Trump’s extreme actions are not – nationally – supported by the majority? Will Donald Trump announce his candidacy for president next week? Will people like Ron DeSantis, the Florida governor who secured his victory by distancing himself from Trump, have the courage to stand up to him?
The period after the election is always the period before the election. President Biden has no doubts about this, claiming this Democratic success as his own and announcing that early next year he and his wife, Jill, will decide whether to run for the White House again.
These questions require answers in the coming days and weeks. But for now, the world can breathe a sigh of relief. American democracy, which was considered to be near death, is still alive. This is really good news.
