According to the Reuters news agency, former Russian president and prime minister Dmitry Medvedev came with a warning:

– If nuclear power loses a conventional war, it can trigger a nuclear war, said Medvedev, who is now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council.

The 57-year-old has served as co-chair of the Security Council since 2020. Jakub M. Gozimirski, Russia researcher at the Norwegian Institute of Foreign Policy (NUPI), told Dagbladet this summer that he now appears as a strange figure.

– As president, he headed Russia’s liberal project, but now he is making statements that inflame the conflict with Ukraine. He has played his part in Russian politics, and no one takes him seriously, said Godzimirski.

During a press conference in the Kremlin later in the day, however, a government spokesman said that Medvedev’s statement was fully consistent with the official Russian line on nuclear weapons.
