Frustrated, Ruud exits the Australian Open
Casper Ruud’s Australian Open comes to an end after the Norwegian suffered a shock loss to American Jenson Brooksby early Thursday.
The American is ranked 39th in the world and won 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2 against third-ranked Ruud.
– It’s tough out there today. An even match with lots of back and forth. There are lots of long ball exchanges. “To be honest, there is a high level and a lot of good tennis out there, so I’m not too dissatisfied or frustrated with the game or the level,” Ruud told NTB after the match.
Ruud lost the first two sets but bounced back with a tiebreak win in the third.
In the fourth set, problems continued for Ruud, and he was given a near impossible task when Brooksby led 5-1. In the end, Brooksby won the set 6-2.
Ruud was clearly frustrated in parts of Thursday’s second round match at the year’s first Grand Slam tournament. He also had to undergo a medical timeout after the second set for unknown reasons.
Ruud comes into the major tournament in Melbourne as the second seed after world number one Carlos Alcaraz had to withdraw due to injury. As Rafael Nadal was knocked out in the first round, Ruud was again the highest ranked in the tournament going into the second round.
Brooksby played well on Thursday morning and broke Ruud’s service game on several occasions. (NTB)
