During the national anthem – with, among others, Crown Prince Håkon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit pictured – some of Brann’s supporters chose not to sing along. Instead, they sang songs like “The city of Bergen is beautiful”.
For while most people, in keeping with tradition, opted to sing along “Yes, we love this country” before the start of the cup final, a few Brann supporters stood up to sing their own national anthem.
– A little impolite
The stunt has attracted attention and caused several people to react.
– I guess I’m one of those who don’t think it’s so bad. The national anthem is a very big part of our country and I think at such a sporting event they can let it go, says NRK expert and former national team player Ingrid Moe Wold.
NRK football pundit Carl-Erik Torp believes fans can sing their own song outside while the national anthem is being played.
– I think that’s a bit impolite. When the national anthem is sung, it is an important and big moment for the players.
The cheers of the fans were also responded to by the reactions of the players after the match.
– You have to sing the national anthem and honor it, I think, said goalkeeper Stabæk Sunniva Skoglund.
– I think they are supporters. They have to stand for what they believe in. It’s great fun, says firefighting captain Tuva Hansen.
– We have to put up with it
The Bataljonen Fire Leader support group, Erlend Ytre-Arne Vågane, confirmed the song selection during the cup final intermission.
– We are from Bergen and we do not recognize that the state of Norway has become anything other than a state with Bergen as its capital. Then there will be Bergen songs during the national anthem. So not everyone is equally happy with it, but we have to put up with it,” he told NRK.
– Did you realize that people can react a bit to that?
– Of course, but we are from Bergen and we can stand it, answered the support leader.
– Little thought
It was reported that over 5,000 spectators were present at the Ullevaal stadium during the cup final. One of them is Bergens Tidende commentator Anders Pamer, who shook his head at the action of the Brann supporters.
– I think it’s weird. I’m from Bergen myself but I found this odd.
Showing off speaks clearly when he believes that someone should sing the national anthem or be silent on the occasion.
– I think this also applies to Brann supporters. If they don’t identify themselves, then they should remain silent, out of respect for those who do.
He further pointed out:
– That’s badly thought out. With the crown prince in the stands as well, I don’t think it works.
Brann ended up winning the cup final against Stabæk 3-1.
