Several EU countries, including Sweden, Denmark, Germany and Austria, have temporarily suspended their bilateral projects. France and Spain are among those who want to continue the aid.

Jonas Gahr Støre (Ap) spoke on Tuesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. The prime minister then asked Abbas to help calm the situation.

– This is the brutal reality that is developing on the ground, for both the Israeli and Palestinian residents. Reports of the ever-increasing number of dead and injured are deeply disturbing. Norway strongly condemns attacks on Israeli civilians and calls for an immediate stop to these attacks. I made this clear in the conversation, Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told NTB.

– The most important thing going forward is to prevent prolonged war and escalation of conflict in the West Bank and other Middle Eastern regions. This will have very dramatic consequences for society on both sides, he continued.

– I encourage everyone to use diplomacy rather than military means. I urge President Abbas to help calm the situation and provide humanitarian assistance to civilians. Any action that could worsen the situation should be avoided. Civilians must be protected and hostages must be released, Støre said.
