For the first time in history, FIBAWorld will have a Norwegian board member on the central board. NBBF vice president Tor Christian Bakken was today elected to the FIBAWorld board as the first Norwegian. This was at the FIBA congress in Manila today, where the NBBF participated alongside president Jan Hendrik Parmann and newly elected board member Tor Christian Bakken.
Tor Christian has for decades been a respected player in FIBA’s international circles, and has previously held a number of positions there, including as a FIBA Europe board member and FIBA referee for several years. He currently serves as vice president of NBBF, with a special focus on international themes.
– This is not only an achievement for Tor Christian and the recognition he deserves has actually been earned internationally, but also for the development of Norwegian basketball when Norwegians are included in the consideration, said basketball president Jan Hendrik Parmann who was delighted , who also said that there was a long and good process behind the scenes leading up to this election to secure the seat on the board. Parmann particularly highlighted the Nordic cooperation, which supports and actively supports Tor Christian’s candidacy.
Furthermore, Parmann said that this is not only important for Norwegian basketball, but for Norwegian sport as a whole – To have someone who sees sporting policies and at least sporting values with a “Norwegian lens” around the world. The second largest and equally influential international special confederation is extremely important, not only for Norwegian basketball, but for all of Norwegian sport. This is especially given the challenges facing the sport today, said the basketball president.
– It almost feels a little surreal and I’m so proud. I will be an advocate for Nordic values, such as openness, diversity, inclusion and participation. Those who want to play basketball shouldn’t have any obstacles, what I’m thinking about is mainly finances. I’m really looking forward to trying myself at this level, said Tor Christian Bakken.

Sports president Zaineb Al-Samarai was delighted when we contacted him with the statement: – First of all, congratulations to Tor Christian Bakken and Norwegian basketball, but also to all of Norwegian sport. It’s great that the Norwegian got a seat at the wheel of one of the world’s biggest sports.
Norwegian sport has great ambitions to increase its influence internationally, and with our international strategy we are working to ensure that more people will have an international presence. It’s just amazing!
